Putting the focus on Women's Eye Health and Safety

Panoptic Vision is raising awareness of women being more susceptible to eyesight issues and promoting proper care to prevent risk.

Did you know that women have a higher risk of permanently losing their sight compared to men?

"66% of people experiencing blindness are women. 61% of people living with cataracts are women. 65% of people with Age-Related Macular Degeneration are women, almost double that of males." (Source: 2014 study in the U.S. titled ‘Vision Problems’)

That is why it is necessary to take steps to prevent this risk. It is also more common for women to suffer from chronic dry eye, which is often associated with rosacea (a health issue prevalent in women). Chronic dry eye can be influenced by hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause.

Common signs of failing eye health

Have you noticed yourself or your older family members doing any of these things?

  • Having trouble reading.

  • Often squinting and pulling the phone away in order to read.

  • Setting the phone text to font size 50.

  • Getting headaches or eyestrain after reading or doing work up close.

If so, it may be time to get your eyes checked, and perhaps get a new pair of glasses.

Presbyopia is a normal eye change which affects everyone over the age of 40. It's a natural process of ageing. It causes the gradual loss of the eyes' ability to focus on nearby objects and blurriness of near vision. A simple eye exam can check if you have presbyopia or not. People generally need vision correction to help them see, so eyeglasses or contact lenses can help.

Eye Health Assessment

This includes a viewing of all layers of the eye. At Panoptic Vision, we use state-of-the-art technology to image the front layers and back of the eye in order to screen for various issues:

  • Corneal scratches or ulcers

  • Dry eye/watery eyes

  • Macular degeneration

  • Optic nerve problems

  • Retinal detachment

  • Glaucoma

  • Blood vessel health which would indicate possible overall health problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Fun with frames

Presbyopia is part and parcel of getting older, but it does not mean it's all gloomy. Because presbyopia can be corrected with eyeglasses, it also means you can have a fun time with our wide range of fashion frames and sunglasses!

You will be spoilt for choice with all the shapes, sizes and colours we have available.

You can combine using both contact lenses and spectacles, so speak to our experienced optical dispensers to learn more about what is most suitable for your needs and lifestyle. We can help with finding a good fitting frame so you can be comfortable and ensure the lenses are correctly positioned to work well.

The upside of it all is technology has now given us an incredible number of options to maximise our vision and complement it with excellent cosmetic results. Whether you prefer a fun and funky frame, or a more classic and elegant one, there are choices you can play around with and jazz up your daily life. And all this with your vision corrected so you can enjoy reading and doing work up-close without feeling the strain.

At Panoptic Vision we are proud to support a local Port Macquarie laboratory which provides the latest European freeform technology lens designs and even has the added advantage of being able to provide a next day service in many cases.
